USCGC Edgar Culbertson (WPC-1137) is the United States Coast Guard's 37th Sentinel-class cutter, and the second of three to be homeported in Galveston, Texas.
The new cutter’s namesake, Petty Officer 1st class Edgar Culbertson of Ferndale, was 31 when he died during the rescue effort in Duluth, Minnesota on April 30, 1967. Culbertson and two other Coast Guard rescuers had tethered themselves with rope and spaced themselves 25 feet apart in an effort to rescue the brothers. Culbertson died, as did all three brothers.
Due to Covid 19 related delays they have not commissioned the vessel. Current plans are to commission the EDGAR CULBERTSON on the 11th of June. The CG is limiting attendance to 50 people so seating will be extremely limited. However, the 8th Coast Guard District will be live streaming the event on Facebook.
